Metropolitan Police to Pay 10,000 in Damages to Woman Arrested at Sarah Everard Vigil

Case Highlights Concerns Over Police Conduct at Protest

Damages Awarded After Woman Unlawfully Arrested and Fined

The Metropolitan Police has agreed to pay 10,000 in damages to a woman who was unlawfully arrested and fined at a vigil for Sarah Everard in Clapham Common, London.

Jennifer Edmunds, represented by solicitors Hodge Jones Allen, was attending the vigil on March 13, 2021, when she was approached by police officers. She was subsequently arrested and fined for breaching COVID-19 regulations.

However, the Metropolitan Police later admitted that Edmunds had not committed any offense and apologized for her arrest. The force has now agreed to pay damages to her and cover her legal costs.

The case has raised concerns over the conduct of the Metropolitan Police during the Sarah Everard vigil. Many protesters, including Edmunds, were treated aggressively by officers, despite the peaceful nature of the gathering.

The payment of damages to Edmunds is a significant step towards acknowledging the wrongdoing of the police. However, it also serves as a reminder of the need for accountability and transparency within the force.
