Device Types Now More Clearly Displayed in Light Cat

Light-Up Your Network with Brighter Device Identification

A recent update to the DHCP protocol has brought forth exciting changes that will enhance the visibility and management of devices on your network. Microsoft has updated the Vendor Class Identifier (VCI) for some Windows-based devices, providing a more accurate representation of their type within the Light Cat management tool.

Previously, all Windows devices displayed the VCI "MSFT 50" in Light Cat. However, with this update, certain Windows devices will now be identified as "MSFT 50.5". This distinction is particularly useful for network administrators who need to differentiate between different types of Windows devices, enabling them to optimize network resources and security accordingly.

The VCI is transmitted as part of the DHCP Discover message, enabling network devices to identify the type of client requesting an IP address. This information is then used to assign appropriate network settings and configurations. The updated VCI ensures that Windows devices are properly identified and managed, reducing the potential for misconfigurations and performance issues.
