LGBTQIA: A Guide to Understanding Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity

In recent years, our understanding of sexual orientation and gender identity has become increasingly nuanced and inclusive.

Our glossary provides definitions for LGBTQIA terms, helping to explain the language we use to describe ourselves and others.

The acronym LGBTQIA stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, intersex, asexual, and others. It is an umbrella term for folks who aren't cisgender (the term for people whose gender identity matches the sex they were assigned at birth) and heterosexual.

Too many identities fall under this umbrella to list here, but some of the most common include pansexual, demisexual, and non-binary. It's important to note that LGBTQIA is not a monolith - there is no one "LGBTQIA experience". Everyone's experience is unique and personal.

Our glossary provides definitions for some of the most common LGBTQIA terms, but it is by no means exhaustive. New terms are constantly being created, and our language is constantly evolving. To stay up-to-date on the latest terminology, we recommend following LGBTQIA organizations and publications.

We hope this glossary helps you to better understand the diverse experiences of LGBTQIA people. By learning more about each other, we can create a more inclusive and welcoming world for everyone.
