Van de Zandschulp Stuns Alcaraz at US Open, Wins in Three Sets
Botic van de Zandschulp has caused a major upset at the US Open, defeating world number four Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets on Thursday to reach the third round.
The Dutchman, who is ranked 117th in the world, produced a brilliant performance to beat the 19-year-old Spaniard 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 in two hours and 22 minutes.
Van de Zandschulp, 27, broke Alcaraz's serve twice in the first set and once in the second to take a two-set lead.
The third set was even more one-sided, as Van de Zandschulp broke Alcaraz's serve three times to seal the victory.
This is the biggest win of Van de Zandschulp's career, and it comes just a few weeks after he reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon.
Alcaraz, who was the favorite to win the US Open, was visibly frustrated by Van de Zandschulp's performance.
"He played very well," Alcaraz said. "He was very solid from the baseline, and he served very well. I didn't play my best tennis today, but he deserved to win."
Van de Zandschulp will face Ilya Ivashka of Belarus in the third round on Saturday.
