Historical Origins
The roots of Memorial Day can be traced back to the aftermath of the American Civil War. In 1868, General John A. Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, called for the establishment of a national day of mourning and remembrance for fallen soldiers. The first official Memorial Day was observed on May 30, 1868, at Arlington National Cemetery.
Traditions and Observances
Over the years, Memorial Day has evolved into a day marked by various traditions and observances. These include:
- Visiting cemeteries and placing flowers or flags on the graves of deceased service members
