New York State Issues REAL ID Driver Licenses and ID Cards
Beginning May 7, 2025, the federal government will require REAL ID for all domestic air travel and entry into federal buildings.
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) began issuing REAL ID licenses, permits, and ID cards on October 30, 2017.
Types of REAL ID and Standard Licenses/IDs
- Standard License/ID: Does not meet the federal REAL ID requirements and cannot be used to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings.
- REAL ID: Meets the federal REAL ID requirements and can be used to board domestic flights and enter federal buildings.
- Enhanced REAL ID: Meets the federal REAL ID requirements and includes additional security features, such as a tamper-resistant polycarbonate construction and a laser-engraved image.
To be compliant with REAL ID, you must visit a DMV office in person and provide proof of identity, residency, and Social Security number. You can find a list of acceptable documents on the DMV website.
The deadline to obtain a REAL ID is May 7, 2025. After this date, you will not be able to board domestic flights or enter federal buildings without a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card.
