## Mpox Outbreak Detected at Iowa Correctional Facility ### What is Mpox? Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a rare but potentially serious disease caused by the monkeypox virus. It can cause symptoms including fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion. Mpox typically causes a rash that looks like small blisters or pimples. The rash often starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body. ### Outbreak at Fort Dodge Correctional Facility On July 28, 2023, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) confirmed the first case of mpox at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility. As of August 1, 2023, there have been a total of 15 confirmed cases of mpox at the facility. All cases have been identified in incarcerated individuals. ### Symptoms of Mpox The symptoms of mpox typically appear within 7 to 14 days after exposure to the virus. However, it can take up to 21 days for symptoms to appear. The most common symptoms of mpox include: * Fever * Headache * Muscle aches * Backache * Swollen lymph nodes * Chills * Exhaustion * Rash The rash associated with mpox often starts on the face and then spreads to other parts of the body.
